Bought a stout kit but don't really like stout - ideas?
Bought a stout kit but don't really like stout - ideas?
That's sound a bit daft doesn't it, but the Milestones Black Pearl kit was on offer at £9 along with their Lions Pride bitter in my local Boyes store (...like Wilkos, but 'northern'!). As it was a 2 x 1.5kg gram kit I just went for it thinking I would brew it and give it away to those that like stout.
In true Wales Ales experimentation mode, I'm now thinking I might do something with it, maybe just a tin at time, to make something I might enjoy a bit more? I used like dark mild so maybe buy a can of Light Malt Extract do it like a two can kit and see how that goes?
Any suggestions for fermentables, adjuncts, yeast, hops welcome.
The recipe that grabs me most, I'll have a go at and report back!!!!
WA, remember I haven't reached your level of palate or experimentation yet so try to keep it sensible as I know you'll come up with something for it?
ps - I'm just going to do the Lions Pride as per kit, but to 21ltrs

Whilst I think about it, I'm planning a Christmas Ale too, so perhaps the other 1.5kg can could be a base for that?

Never mind then - I guess I'll just follow the instructions on the kit and find sons grateful stout drinkers!

Try the stout - you may be pleasantly surprised. Lots of people have been put off by the frozen Guinness and Murphy cans with a widget but there are plenty of tasty stouts about. Try Titanic or if you're lucky enough to come to Wales give Brains and Felinfoel stouts a go. Go to Co Cork and drink Beamish as well or the bottled Guinness Original.

Liking your idea of a dark mild for one brew and I would definitely recommend hopping the other can up.
I brewed a wilko stout with Amarillo last winter, and it was very drinkable
Cheers

Ok, I'm going to try one with an extra can of Medium or light LME and add a hop infusion - I'll try so etching like Amarillo or Cascade ang go for it - 50gms as I think LME will be decently hopped already.
If I like the maltiness and colour I might try the same again with spices for a Crimbo type thing!
Will report back on both!

I'd suggest trying one can made to the instructions (or, better, to Ditch's approach). For years I thought I did not like stout; then I discovered that is not stout I don't like, it's Guinness. Since then I have never been without a keg of Ditchesque stout; it has become my universal fallback brew.Hopping_Mad wrote:That's sound a bit daft doesn't it, but the Milestones Black Pearl kit was on offer at £9 along with their Lions Pride bitter in my local Boyes store (...like Wilkos, but 'northern'!). Happy brewing,
