Cheap carbonation drops?

Post by twentyfootwilf » Wed Sep 10, 2014 6:01 pm

Just bottled up forty four 500ml bottles of Coopers Australian Lager, thought I'd try a quick method of priming each bottle so I got some carbonation drops, but instead of buying Coopers carbonation drops at 3 quid for 250 grams I got a 500g box of tate and lyle demarera sugar lumps for for about 1 pound 50. Each lump weighs 4g so is just about right for a 550ml bottle. I suppose it will be okay and was quicker than putting loose stuff through a narrow funnel.

The ones I bought do fit in as long as you drop them in straight and not at an angle. I'm hoping one cube per bottle is enough, two I think would be too much!

My sugar cubes were Silver Spoon so maybe they're a different shape to T&L? I generally go for batch priming these days. I'd have thought one per bottle would be about right.

For small batches where I can't batch prime I make up a syrup e.g. 100g sugar in 100ml water and use a syringe. Even the ones that come in children's medicine work OK.

It must be one of the few times where using liquid makes it more granular. See what I did there

Agree with Ex and Ant on batch priming, a lot less faff :D
