coopers apa yeast

Post by timbo41 » Mon Sep 22, 2014 9:41 am

Does anyone know the strain used in this kit. Pitched yesterday and active krausen today but very sulphury which I associate with lager strains in which case ill move to somewhere cooler. Wasn't expecting that. I thought all non lager kits from coopers came with the B R 097 / wlp 009 aussie ale strain

The APA comes with a 50/50 mix of the Coopers ale strain and a commercial Lager (unknown) yeast.

Nice one Monks explains a lot. Fv temp at 16 which should suit then plus forgot to mention also pitched half packet wilkos gervin also. Tend to now to avoid underpitch when doing kits. Starter when ag which I do from cooled wort. Easy when you no chill just draw a little off then fridge for couple hours. Starter normally ready about same time as wort next day
Just like trying new ideas!

No problem, it's always good to know what's fermenting your beer.

16C is optimal for that yeast mix because I remember reading that the Coopers ale yeast will ferment at 16C minimum.

6 - 7g of yeast is very measly for a 23L kit brew, especially if the yeast is nearing it's end date, or has been stored badly. Quite wise to add some Gervin too.

Cheers
