Has anyone added Golden Syrup to their brew or a similar sweetener?

What difference does it make? I have a sweet tooth hence the syrup.

It doesn't make it any sweeter as all the sugar ferments out. The black treacle just provides a bit more body.

In my experience, golden syrup does impart some extra component to the taste, but in the amounts used in ale, with the malt and hops, you might not notice it except as extra body or more 'fullness'.
What I've used it for is a cheap honey substitute for a melomel.
I basically took a berry wine recipe, dumped the tannin, and used honey or golden syrup instead of sugar. And a lot of it as I was trying to reach 18%. In that kind of quantity (something like 5lbs to a gallon, I forget exactly) you can tell it tastes different (to both ordinary sugar and honey) - slight but definite toffeeish backnote. Everybody who's tried it likes it.

I believe that it is an acceptable substitute for candi sugar. I'm sure I've seen some of Wales' (less adventurous) brews use it

I have used Golden Syrup often in the past. It has the same properties as invert sugar, so fermentation is arguably slightly quicker. I have also found it imparts a very slight toffee taste. My favorite sugar syrup to use is molasses, especially in dark beers. It adds a gorgeous taste.

NB Not sure where I picked up this info, but I believe, like honey, it's only 80% sugar equivalent by weight
