Just been to my local HBS!

Post by Wekslap » Fri Oct 17, 2014 8:25 pm

Hi there.

(Sorry. Posted this into a previous post by mistake)

Been to my lhbs yesterday (15 mins walk and 25 min bus ride away). Got a better brew midland mild for £5 for 1.8k in a bag kit! Was after a nice dark mild like I used to like years ago in Kent and the lake district. Didn't realise till got home that the picture on the front looks like its a light mild. Oh well! Suppose I could darken it. They had a few other better brew kits for a fiver and some simply ones in a bag kits and finlandia ones for £7. Are any of these any good? Also someTooheys kits in big tins for £10. Weren't these an Ozzy brewery like Coopers?

I asked the shop owner what she would recommend for as near as possible to a newcy brown for to brew up as a present for me dad who loves his newcy brown, and she advised me to get a Samson's Newkie Brown which I bought. On looking on here I don't think it gets very favourable reviews tho. And I've noticed a few in here have recommended black rock but brown ale as a close approximation to newcy b. I ccould still return it and swap for another! They also had a couple of other brand kits which were labeled as newky Brown-like. Any thoughts on which newcy brown kit best to get?

Lot to answer there. Firstly the black rock nut ale is nice kit...use spraymalt though not sugar
Second.... At a fiver a pop fill your boots! All the better brews and simplys are ok, lend themselves well to the black art of kit modding... Always spraymalt. As for newky... You wouldn't be first... Always difficult it seems as iirc its a blended beer. And yes tooheys is an aussie brewer, from victoria I think
Just like trying new ideas!

I second WA on the Simply Pale Ale. Did it with 1kg of brew enhancer and 500 gms of light spraymalt and it is most definitely ''bloody lovely mun"!!!

I got three more at the offer price of £7.99 and, as timbo suggests, I'm going to tinker with them by dry hopping.

Thanks HM. I'll def get one of those then.

And thanks Wales, what did you add to your simply pale?

Any other simply or better brew kits worth a brew up?

What newcy brown-like kits would you both say are nearest to the original?

Thanks
John

Thanks Wales. I'm defo going to try some. The pale first I think. Are any better brew any good also? I can get simply for £7 and better brew for a fiver!

And my research so far for Newcastle brown for me Da: The local hb stores seem to come down 50/50 between brewmaker Northumberland brown and Samson's newkie brown. On the forums some say the Samson's is horrible and that the Northumberland is nice but not exactly like newkie brown. And also on the forum black rock nut brown seems to be thought of as very close, and possibly Simply brown ale also. I would really love to find an answer as my dad would be over the moon if I cracked this. I was gonna make him some special labels and everything.

Thanks for bumping me Wales, and your advice.

John

Weks,
I`ve never done a `Better Brew`, so I can`t help you there.
