Conditioning AFTER aging?

Hi,

My most recent kit was Woodfordes Headcracker which I started in a large stainless pan for a week or so.
I transferred to a polypin for secondary and put a bit more sugar in for conditioning, letting out the remaining gas through the tap every couple of days.

The beer was a bit rough around the edges when first put into secondary but after 2 months or so, it had aged to a very tasty grog. There was no indication that the beer had spoiled in the polypin for that long a period, but all of the conditioning had gone.

Is it acceptable to age a beer first, then condition a few days before drinking, or will the young alcohol from the conditioning sugars affect the flavour of the beer for the worse?

Big beers are often bulk aged prior to bottling.
I've bulk aged a RIS for 8 months and the reseeded with yeast to bottle.
