I am looking for a base to experiment on, not sure such a kit exists although im hoping you guys here can help. The plan is to get that biscuit taste as a base then add my own hopping or other flavours.
Any suggestions?
Tony
Looking for a malty biscuit tasting kit for experimenting
Re: Looking for a malty biscuit tasting kit for experimentin
The malty biscuit taste can be extracted from steeping Crystal or Munich malt @ 67-70c for 30 minutes.
For an APA I tend to use 100-200g steeped in 3-4 litres of water.
You just have to be careful of the residual sweetness it can leave as all the sugars will not fully ferment out. This can be offset by adding some hops to the simmer.

I did do some research after posting and all pointers were Crystal so thank you for pushing me that way also.
Actually upon further thinking tonight what I am actually looking for is a good Ale base to work on for hopping and flavouring, so pretty much an unhopped kit which I then experiment with hop flavours and bitterness, its not looking like anyone does this from the larger commercial kit producers but obviously a kit from a HBS could be put together...and probably is the base of many kits that are sold.
My plan was to produce 45 pint batches and split them 3 ways for different hop additions, so I get 3 brews to compare against each other, all hopefully ready around the same time. Initial thoughts were to try to aim for session beers, no higher than 5% and play around for 12 months or so finding what hops I like etc. Each base brew would be the same, so hopefully somewhat constant, the only changes would be hop and other flavourings I add such as fruits, ginger, spices etc
Its probably a silly idea, probably not how most do it but I would like to retain a constant to make comparing easier.

This kit lends itself well to your needs.
Low colour, flavour and bitterness out of the box, so experiment away!

Cheers

I think you have seen this thread, has me very interested. I actually looked at that coopers kit last night in Tesco as they are down to 10quid...might have to pick up a couple to have a mess with.

I have to say that the Coopers APA is my kit of choice for tinkering with.
I'm currently supping on an apollo APA consisting of:
1 tin of Coopers APA
1 tin of light liquid malt extract
200g of Munich malt grains simmered @ 67c for 30 minutes
100g of Wheat malt grains simmered @ 67c for 30 minutes
25g of Apollo hops for 30 minute boil
15g of Apollo hops on flame out and steeped for 20 minutes
50g of Apollo hops added as a dry hop after 7 days of fermenting and left in there for 7 days.
Result is a lightly hopped pale ale, lots of citrus aroma, a bitter sweet flavour (a bit like hopping hare or golden badger) and loads of citrusy flavour.

Looks like I will be getting a couple of kits in to play with, however, this will probably be in the new year now as I have a St Peters IPA to do as my first one picked up some off tastes so I want a second go (planning on some hop addition also)
