old brewing books

Post by Wekslap » Fri Nov 07, 2014 10:49 pm

I've just stumbled across my old brewing books and magazines from 20 odd years ago. Are they still worth a peruse? Or have modern methods made them redundant? I've got the berry's, shales and Dave line books amongst others, and a year or two's edition's of home beer & winemaking, and winemaker.

Thanks

John

Please read through them and tell us how much the HomeBrew scene has progressed (or not).
Put them on Ebay, some other sad old git will buy them! :D :D
How much do you want for them?

I prefer to think of myself as a child of the sixties! Listening to absolute 60's as I bottle.

They do but I use a drip tray and fill one bottle whilst capping the last and getting the next ready.

I have Shales and Line. Shales was passed on to me from a more 'senior' homebrewer. I still use his /0.0074 rule of thumb for alcohol calculation in my head along the way (7.4 SG drop equating to very roughly 1% ABV), though I use the HMRC method in the end. Other than that... I think the richest information comes from the internet, but it's how you filter, interpret and apply it, I guess. Those with a historical element, such as Brew Like a Monk for a decade or so ago, will probably remain more timeless.

Weks, take a flick through 'em. I've got an old Boots brewing and wine making book from the 80s; great for a read and idea generation.

Talking of Boots EB, how's this for nostalgia? Takes me back to the seventies/eighties.[img][img]

I started with the Ken Shales books. He lived 5 mins walk from where I grew up, I've meet a couple of men who talk of his drinking sessions in his shed.
