Newbie mistake !!!!

Post by Dannyboy98765 » Mon Nov 10, 2014 12:06 pm

Hi everyone was just wondering if anybody would be able to give me a bit of guidance if possible please?.

Recieved my home brew kit for my birthday with a St peters IPA kit to make, and in my rush of excitement at finally being able to get my first brew on didn't read the instructions properly. Added a both of the cans of malt to 3.5 litres of boiling water, then proceeded to add another 19ish litres of water, instead of topping up to 19 litres ! . I brewed his on Saturday night should I take out the extra I've put in or do anything else ?

Thanks for any help, This site has been great for brushing up my very limited knowledge.

There's nothing you can do to correct the mistake now, but don't worry - the beer will still be OK, just a little bit weaker than it should have been.

It's pointless taking any liquid out, as you will just remove extract with it, and will be no better off at all.

Could add some DME for a bit of extra body? You'll have reduced some bitterness and hop aroma though. Probably easiest to chalk this one down to experience though.

You could still add some hop pellets in at the end of fermentation for a couple of days the give it a bit more aroma.

Buy a hop bag to put then in and sanitise it first.

DB,
Don`t worry about it, don`t follow the Kit Instructions to the letter, check the gravity on day 11, then day 14, if readings are the same,
you are OK to bottle / barrel. ( If it`s below 1012). Don`t rush into anything, ask the Nice People on JBK if you have any worries! :D

Hi just got a few more questions if anyone can help ?

Firstly i'm going to try and batch prime to then fill in to bottles, was wondering how much sugar i would need for the 22l batch ? it says 1/2 teaspoon per bottle on instructions ?
Secondly how much water should i mix with the sugar with before boiling it ?

I think ale drinkers use around 80-100g for 22l.

Lager brewer myself so I whack a bit more than that in.
