Hi All,
Long time reader, but first time poster, looking for help.
I'm looking to citrus hop the hell out of an IPA kit.
Can anyone help with a hop schedule, including dry hopping, using the following?
John Bull IPA kit 1.8kg
500g Medium Spraymalt
1kg Muntons Beerkit enhancer (DME & Dextrose)
11g Gervin English Ale Yeast
HOPS
100g Cascade (Pellets)
Floral and Citrus aroma
Dual Purpose Hop
AA 6.6%
100g Wakatu/Hallertau Aroma
Moderate Bittering and floral/lime aroma
Dual Purpose Hop
AA 8.2%
100g Kazbek
Slightly spicy with zesty lemon/grapefruit aromas.
AA 5.65%
I'm looking to boil the spraymalt, adding hops for bittering and aroma, before adding to the kit.
Then adding a dry hop after a few days.
Many thanks in advance.
Hop Schedule Advice?
Re: Hop Schedule Advice?
Welcome mate.
Generally wait until fermentation has ended and then hop (which is normally about between day 7 - 10). I would suggest hopping for about 4 days. Dry hopping before this time can mean that you lose some of the aroma from the hops.
In terms of your suggestion with the kit, I recently did a Jon Bull IPA kit in exactly the same way and dry hopped with 100G of cascade. It turned into a fantastic pint, however, needed a while in the keg to become at its best (about two moths). When I did it, I let it ferment for 7 days, and then dry hopped for the final 7 days.
Hope this helps

Hi Manngold,
Thanks for the welcome and help.
Do you have any ideas with the boil?
I'd like to get as much citrus hops as possible.

Re: Hop Schedule Advice?
Are you looking for citrus aroma or bitterness?
You can boil the DME and add some bittering hops at the beginning. You last additions will contribute to flavour and aroma. A good method to get nice pungent hop aroma is to dry hop your beer as Manngold suggested.
Now with the quantities... depends how much bitterness you can handle. In a 20 L batch, you can boil 50g of Wakatu 60 mins and add cascade and kazbek for late additions: 10/5/0mins. Regarding the aroma hops (late hop additions or dry hop), I would imagine the more the merier.

Thanks,
This is a bit of an experiment for me. I'll give it a try and try a bit different next time to see what happens.
