Just read the instructions and it says to rack off to a secondary if bottling but I don't have a syphon and usually just bottle from primary.....would it be better to used a secondary?

Yes. Spend a few quid on a bottling bucket, and certainly a bit of hose for transfer. Ideally a bottling wand too. All available cheap from Wilkos. This is basic kit really.
