Coopers Irish Stout

Post by cwrw gwent » Tue Jan 26, 2021 2:20 pm

I bought a Cooper's Irish Stout kit from the https://darkrockbrewing.co.uk/ brewing supply shop (recommended for its very good service) and it's now two months old. I don't know which Irish Stout they've based it on but it's far too aggressively bitter for me. Luckily, after having consumed half the brew, I decided to blend it on a 50/50 basis with a month-old Geordie Mild and the result is not unlike the bottle-conditioned pint bottles of Guinness last seen about twenty years ago. From a bitterness point of view it's on a par with Murphy's so it's easy to drink.
I don't know if you've tried Cooper's English Bitter, but having made it once I was disappointed that it bore no resemblance to any English ale I've drunk.
If I tried it again I would add a hefty dose of hops - unlike the Irish Stout it was lacking in bitterness.

Thanks WA! And all done without the use of teabags.
On a serious note, I'd like to find a kit similar to the discontinued Edme Stout - tasty but not too bitter.
