Eggy smell

Post by Daz1737 » Sun Apr 03, 2022 8:10 pm

Hello, I'm after some guidance on what might have gone wrong with my latest kit brew. There's very little CO2 being generated and an eggy smell is coming from the airlock. I have stuck with my usual hygene routine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What's the yeast, some throw off sulphur which they will clean up.

I made my Aussie lager/pale ale with saflager s23 and it stunk the place out!

Tasted great though.

The yeast is struggling for nutrition. That smell is hydrogen sulphide.

This is fixable if you add some yeast nutrient.

You can also fix off taste with copper. If you are a chemist measure accurately the copper required. Alternatively stir gently with a pure copper utensil until its gone.

Thanks for the reassurance, hopefully it's not spoilt.

The kit was a Hoptimum IPA with with PIA (Kiwi Pale Ale) yeast. Not used this yeast before.

Some lager yeasts are notorious for that smell. Any that might carry over will dissipate with a little age.
I'm just here for the beer.

You can even use a piece of clean copper pipe, but unless you have an offcut, I don't reckon it's worth ripping the central heating system apart 🤣🤣
