Hi Dave - I did wonder if I was inadvertently given the bitter kit! I may contact Muntons for their thoughts though I've thrown the cans away which presumably would have some code/info relating to their manufacture. I've still got the packaging which is definitely for the Gold Continental Pilsner.
The main thing is that it's eminently drinkable so I won't complain!

Thanks for the photo Dave - the colour looks very similar to the pilsner currently lagering in my garage.
I contacted Muntons who replied as follows (and as expected):
"Without the batch numbers I can’t check the product that went into the cans to know what specification the material was in each one. However, we do know that as the malt extract sits in cans and goes past its best-before-date it does pick up colour in the can and could therefore cause a change in the appearance of the brew once brewed out."
The lesson is to check the use-by date each time I brew.
