Grabbed everything from the brewery and did the photos on the kitchen table instead :)

This is the twin lever capper I generally use. It's fairly old now, perhaps as much as twenty-five years. It's even possible that I bought it from Boots. The mechanism looks different from the one previously posted. Perhaps that might have an effect on the ease of use?

The result:

I have a couple of bench cappers, including this one:

and a cap put on using this at its lowest possible setting:

You can see that it hasn't crimped the cap closed anywhere near as well, to the point where, unlike the first capper, the cap can actually be removed without creasing it. In fact I reckon I could probably re-use the one on the left:

I'm not at all convinced the cap is adequately sealed. My other, more expensive, bench capper, bought because I wasn't happy with the one above, has exactly the same problem.

I'm all ears if there is a way to make them work properly (to my way of thinking, at least).

Oh, yes, to be fair once in a while I do get a bottle where the top breaks off. Most recently today, in fact. Some of my bottles are even older than the capper and quite possibly date back to when I gave up making beer from kits in the early 90's. Some of them might have come from Boots, too :D After thirty-odd years and at least four house moves I imagine a few of them have picked up the odd bit of damage that eventually causes them to fail. I've not had reason to blame the capper as far as I'm aware.

As the beer we made yesterday is a Newcastle Brown clone (my son's request, though I can't deny that I have enjoyed the occasional "bottle o' dog" myself from time to time), I made the effort to dig out as many NB bottles as I could find in my collection. I was surprised by the number of different styles, not to mention the obvious decrease in size of the modern ones.

On the bench capper smear a bit of vaseline on the inside rim of the bell and you will find it works much better.

I have gone back to simple whacker and a rubber mallet. Fill them in the crate and then whack'em in the crate. Awesome.

I too have a very wide collection of bottles, dating back is easier in decades. Have you also noticed the hole size had gotten bigger??

I reuse crown caps. Getting them off flat, depends on the opener. But I did get your point.

I feel some experiments coming up next bottling.

That was the one I bought when I wasn't happy with the one above. I still wasn't happy with the way it closed the caps.

Yeah I have very similar does all 3 functions.
Never had a problem, but will be looking a bit closer now. Only tend to use mine for "bit more" if a whack didn't do it. Hmm.

Do you mean these...

Is there a nack? cos I could never get a satisfactory result with it.
That’s the one I’ve been using for 12 years, and have never had an issue with it.

I briefly used the floor capper IPA mentions above, but I didn’t really have space for it so sold it on.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

I've used swing tops for that long and never had an issue.

I agree, a great capper!

Is there a different attachment for corking I can get, or do I need to buy a completely different model?

A corker will do capping (both sizes), but I have never seen a capper that does corking.

The corker has a completely different head. I will post some pictures tomorrow.
