syphoning off beer.

Once the beer has stopped fermenting i always use a hose to syphon off the beer. is there another way of doing this. I suppose this is the old fashioned method but is it still the best way to syphon off beer so you dont get all that muck in the bottom of the bucket?

If you bought a syphon set then it probably has a U bend or some other structure so that it can't draw from the bottom centimetre or so.

I started with a fermenter with a tap a couple of cm from the base. Later I bought a second fermeter with no tap but I didn't get on with a syphon so I bought a water butt tap from ebay for a quid and drilled a hole.

As the bottom of the tap hole is above the trub I never have a problem (actually not true, I sometimes tilt the fermenter if I reckon I can get a bit more clear beer out - sometimes I'm right, other times I'm wrong ;) )

I always label the last bottle with an "L" so I know if the taste is funny, not to be surprised.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

I brought a bin and drum tap seperately. Drilled 20mm hole with hole saw about 1/2 inch from base of bin to allow for sludge to build up. This is by far the best method for transfering beer from primary to barrel/bottle, using a length of tube pushed on to tap, long enough to reach bottom of barrel. Just do as above and tilt bin to get last remaining beer from bottom of bin.
All this is of course purely based on my limited experience, and from reading many, many bits on this forum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
