Done my first brew using the new false bottom and very happy with it so far. I set the flow rate at the start of transfer from kettle to fermenter, through the chiller, and there was not noticable drop-off throughout. Normally I would constantly be fiddling because the flow rate would gradually decrease and the wort would over-chill. I didn't need to touch it this time. Used all leaf hops in this brew so yet to see how it performs using pellets.

This is the stuff that the false bottom caught.

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

All that got through was a bit of break material which the pump has no problem dealing with.

I found one on AliExpress that looks like it might be the right one. £14 including shipping and several of the feedback comments say that it works with Grainfather so I think I'll take my chances with it. I will update here once it has arrived.

Just ordered one of these. I use pellets so hopefully it works with these as well.

@john luc I’ve used mine twice now and very pleased with it. Definitely seems to reduce issues with pump blocking when using pellet hops. And contributes to better wort clarity..

I went about the problem from a slightly different angle, and wrote it up here:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=83492#p859970

Might turn up some more useful ways of tackling the issue?

But be warned, I do get a bit shirty when talking about hop pellets (whoever thought they would be a good product to give home-brewers? Grr).

Brewed last weekend and for the first time in 7 brews I had no issues with the pump on my GF30. Very happy to have chilled down to 20c in 20 mins without resorting to a bicycle pump to back flush the GF supplied filter as I've had to do on every previous occasion.

For goodness sake just use a Hop Spyder and a bit of a whirlpool.

I think you've got to come up with something a bit better than that.

Get the wrong hop spider - it won't work!

Try creating a whirlpool in a boiler full of attachments (a sticky-out element for instance, rather than a "flat" contained one, or even a hop-spider!) - it wont work!

You had better come up with something a bit less generalised ...

for goodness sake.

Aamcle,
I think you should have said `FFS` instead of `for goodness sake`. :D

The Yarpies will understand that much better! :D

I agree about the spider. 800 micron did good for me with pellets.

But... Are we not just polishing the proverbial turd here. Is the real issue that the GF pump/pipework is not up to the job.

Not really a problem for me on my Grainfather. I have an old model built before the days of bluetooth :) . Although I have a hop spider I have done all my hopping bare back and it works fine although a bit slow. I used the hop spider once but what bothers me about it is the wort inside it during the boil just doesn't roll like the rest of the wort. So when you add the hop charge it sits so even more. I like the idea of allowing the hops boil free and whirlpool free so hopefully this plate can add extra filtration :D

Hm, "Yarpie"? Difficult one that, originally South African slang and a derogatory term for a white South African man. Best I could find on Google for its "modern" meaning is "to be aggressive or act like a bitch towards someone, damn well knowing you will get slapped up" (from Urban Dictionary originally?) which fits well. Trouble is, that's working the wrong way around. In both your ("WalesAles") and "aamcle's" cases that means the "Yarpie" label gets stuck to those attempting to start an argument (you and "aamcle")!

I don't enjoy ranting at other users, especially users who I've previously got on okay with. Can both of you stop being "Yarpies"!

[EDIT: And having established "WalesAles" is a modern day "Yarpie" perhaps he's the correct to person to ask if he can spell out what "FFS" means?]
