2015 BM20 skipping steps

Post by Nashbrew » Tue Mar 29, 2022 8:05 am

Anyone else have the following issue.
I overnight mash so was woken at 430 am on Sunday morning with the mash finished and it was not a clock issue.
My 2015 BM20 has started skipping steps this is the second time it has done this now.
I understand there is maybe a battery inside the controller but have not been inside mine to check yet.

I wish I could help in some way, but I have a 2012 so can't assist. Good luck buddy.

Do you have the Internet connector attached.. is it anything to do with that?

Dear god please tell me spiedel haven't put a non replaceable battery in there.

Hi Mash

Not been inside yet currently have brew fermenting in it.
It has never touched the interweb or been updated.
Once it is out I am going to tare the controller apart to see what the battery is.
Will have to do a couple of dry runs to trust it overnight again.
Maybe time to look at the Brau-Father idea again.

If it does have an internal battery (and from a quick look on the BM forum it appears so), then it is very likely a coin/watch style battery like PC motherboards have and it should be easy to replace.

A good selection of ideas for alternative options here..

I have looked at the DIY build your own pi thing, but came to a conclusion that a Grainfather G30 controller would almost be a direct replacement, and only cost £100 all in, plus some cable work.

I have to agree... building a controller does seem daunting. And the GF drops on your doormat for £100....

Typical BIOS battery setup. Good to see a picture for future reference though. 🙂
I will cross my fingers it fixes it for you. If not it might be worth trying to update the software on the controller anyway.

Have you contacted Speidel? They do have support staff to help with things like this. They can be a bit slow to respond but I have generally found them to at least try to be helpful and they may take your controller in for exchange/repair/testing.

Contacted Speidel they advised to update via a WiFi adaptor or a cable.
They still do not ship direct to UK customers but BrewUK are now importing from them, so will probably go with the cable option to update.
£35 rather than £130 for the WiFi unit.

Ouch..

Is it worth the drive. Can you take it to be updated?

If I had one I would lend it.

Hi Mash

Dont know anyone with cable or a WiFi unit I could borrow.
I thought about making my own cable but the cost is about the same, and lead time for the connecter is later in the year!!!!
Will probably just end up buying a cable from BrewUK

Don't understand!!! £35 for a cable?

Can't it just be plugged into your PC and the update taken from the 'net?

As you've guessed, I don't have one of these Speidel things, but surely a web based update should be simple?

Apologies in advance if what I've said is just plain stupid!
