Dried Apple Powder

Post by The Dribbler » Tue Sep 06, 2022 1:45 pm

Hi, I'm new to cider brewing and fancied giving a TC a whirl. I came across 1kg tubs of Dried apple powder on ebay £15.75 also their website https://www.garffen.co.uk/fruit_powders.htm

Has anyone on here used this type of product?

I like strong appley ciders (westons vintage) and wondered if this product could help me achieve a 6.5 + abv with strong flavour.

Looks interesting. Haven't heard of it before. Pricing looks good.
To get your desired ABV you'll need to check the sugar content and do some sums.
Rule of thumb - 20g per litre sugar gives 1%
If you try it please report back

I just use juice from Aldi and add some more sugar if I want stronger. That stuff says use 3-400g powder and add 4kg sugar.

It says it has skin and seed in so you won't need the teabags, but other than that I'd say use juice.

12L Aldi apple juice 79p a litre
4L Apple and Cranberry (or mango/whatever!) also 79p a litre
4L very stewed PG tips - 10 bags boiled for 1/2 hour while you pour the juice (although other teas are available)
Bag of sugar white brown whatever
Yeast nutrient and yeast

Nice cider. Not quite scrumpy of course, but you could always cook and mash a couple of Bramleys in there to roughen it up!

That amount of sugar is to make a 10/11 % apple wine according to the destructions so a couple of kg for cider.

This powered stuff... I've read is what they use to make some types of concentrated apple juice.

by using powder you should be able to get more apple flavour in the brew.. maybe more mouth feel?

Dunno, thats why I thought id ask

Give it a go, not too expensive if it doesn't work.

I'm in Manchester too so we could always do a comparison!
