Does anyone out there use beer yeast to make mead?
I'm just here for the beer.

Mead users use all sorts of things. Beer, bread and wine yeast.

I have used beer and bread yeasts. A lightly hopped mead is very pleasant.

I think you are in the same boat as me judging by your name so I would just get a few brew's under the belt before exploring different Yeasts get a bit of experience and continuity. Champagne Yeast is good but Ferments out really Dry ,but you can BackSweeten to taste.
Hope This Helps

Actually the name goes way back to my teenage years. I've been brewing beer and cider since the late '90s, but rarely meads.

I'd say it really depends on the OG. Brewer's yeast might not be up to fermenting higher gravity meads. Lager yeast are good for lower gravity meads. Horses for courses, as they say.
