Would this be too bitter?

Post by booldawg » Fri Feb 01, 2008 2:13 pm

I've got 5kg of pale malt and 100g of EKGS. Hoping to make up 25L tomorrow. I'd orginally thought 73g for 90 mins and 13g for last 15. Would this be too bitter? and how many EBUs would it be?

I guess it all depends on how bitter you like your bitter.

For a beer around 1045 that level of hopping would be fine IMO. It's at the higher end of the scale but, nowt wrong with that. I think the EBU's would be around 35/40 but would need to know the AA content of your hops to get specific.

This thread has prompted me to look at the IBU's in all the AG brews I have done thus far and it's interesting that my favourites all tend to be around the 30/35 mark in an average beer of 1040-1045og. My London Pride has 47 units according to Beersmith and I do find that too harsh.

I would be ok with that as long as the AA% was around 4.5-5ish, but as Buzz says it does depend on your palate, maybe start off with less and ajust the next time you brew? Worked for me.

I've worked it out at 33 IBU's. This is only on the copper hops though. Not sure how much more bitterness the late copper hops will provide.

13g of late hops are mainly for aroma and wont add much to the bitterness. If you've got 33IBU's I'd say that was bang on. :=P
