That's what I've read. I've never met/talked with/corresponded with anyone who's actually tried it. Have you?

The first mead I ever made (in 1991!) was of buckwheat honey. I have one bottle left in my refrigerator. It was badly damaged by my move from Montreal to Florida, spending days in a moving van at 35C. Nevertheless, the last bottle of it I had, about a year ago, was incredible.

Anyway, everyone back then said it was too strong a honey for use in mead, but it worked out very well over time. The books say the same about heather honey, but I have no access to that so I've never made mead with it.

In these parts, we also get gallberry honey, which has worked well for me in a strong, slightly sweet mead.
Secondary FV: As yet unnamed Weizenbock ~7%
Bulk aging: Soodo: Grocery store grape juice wine experiment.
Drinking: Mostly Canadian whisky until I start brewing again.
