A hoppy best - just Goldings

Post by fivetide » Tue Oct 14, 2008 2:35 pm

This week (if I manage to find time to clean everything before it ends) I'm looking to make a nice hoppy Best Bitter.

Here's the recipe anyhoo - let me know if you think you'd fancy a pint (of course you'd have to be in my back garden in about six weeks to actually take me up on that offer).

I'm wondering whether or not to add more hops at flameout, actually... :?:

Fivetide's Hoppy Best

Mashing (90mins, 65c - sparge at 76c)
Pale Malt 4Kg, 84.2%
Crystal Malt 500g, 10.5%
Wheat Malt, 250g, 5.3%

Boiling (90mins)
Bobek Goldings 4%AA, 75g, 90mins
Bobek Goldings 4%AA, 25g, 15mins
Styrian Goldings 35g, Flameout steep

Other bits
Campden
Whirlfloc
SafAle S-04 rehydrated

Figures and that
Est. Brew length: 23L
Est. OG: 1.046
Est. FG: 1.012
Est. Bitterness: 38.7 IBU
Est. ABV: 4.5%

Recipe sounds good. Hops at flame out are always great. I'd ferment it for 7 days, then rack into a corny keg, and drink in another week. Fresh beer is the best beer.

I know what you're saying Whorst, but I always taste fresh beer as a little green and wish I'd left it longer to condition and blend fully.

Horses for courses I guess!

I made a couple of bottles of my recent Pion Brew golden ale though, which is a pretty low ABV of about 3.6%, so I'll open one of these early and see if that whole keg is worth cracking early too.

Cheers. Off to the pub now to see what the experts have conjoured up...

looks a tasty beer chief! in fact, its 500g of MO off my house ale! and the hop schedules a little different, but hell, you cant go wrong really!!!
i always leave mine about 5 weeks or more before tapping though.

Sounds nice, I love single variety brews, Goldings being my favourite. I'd leave it to fully mature as well, especially if you're looking for a hoppy beer. The bitterness usually takes time to come through. I find green beers too malty.

I usually leave my beers to secondary and condition for a very long time. Not sure I'll get to brew this tonight now - too much on and a late night at work beckons.

Ha! awalker, you could actually get here in less than half an hour! If it works out well, I'll let you know... :D

It is a bit like Stunner I guess, only with 10% crystal, some wheat, a bit more malt overall, and more hops generally.

If I get to do this later, I'll up my flameout hops to 50g I think, but the mash tun is still grainy and the boiler is still covered in oomfgah in the shed while I crack on with another bloody whitepaper...
