Dry hopping with Fuggles
Have just dry hopped Fuggles for the first time and added 25g to 23L. Is this about right or have I went over board?
Cheers

That's not too outlandish, as a matter of fact I like it.

Re: Dry hopping with Fuggles
How do u guys dry hop ? Just chuck straight into barrel or wrap in something first ?
Re: Dry hopping with Fuggles
You can do either. I put in a muslin bag, so they can be pulled out easier. Although technically you'l get more flavour if you just chuck them in and let them sink to the bottom.

i do 30 gr of fugs in the fv for 5-7 days but av got a ss tea ball off amazon i plan to chuck in keg one of the days but am a bit worried they say you can get a grassy taste if you use to much ......how much is to much?floydmeddler wrote:Have just dry hopped Fuggles for the first time and added 25g to 23L. I've heard the grassy taste is more down to leaving them in for too long (+14 days) rather than the amount used, although I may be wrong.

Re: Dry hopping with Fuggles
I have never dry hopped but GW's recipe for Old Peculiar calls for a few Styrians dry hopped as i have just got it in the FV and all wrapped up nice and snug would it be too late to put them in tomorrow say ? or wait till the yeast head has dropped somewhat ? and how many is a few ?

Re: Dry hopping with Fuggles
According to the brewing network (I listened to their show on dry hopping the other day), its best to dry hop when fermentation has a few points left to go, then you wont have any problems with oxidation, as the yeast is still working. There is a bit of a trade off in flavour from the yeast still working though, so stick a few extra grams in maybe?
I also had no idea OP was dry hopped

i know gw says to use a few cones in keg ,but take it from me if you put hops in your fv you will need a lot more than that to get any noticable differance as i said i av been using 30gr of fugs and it just fine for my tasteBorodave wrote:According to the brewing network (I listened to their show on dry hopping the other day), its best to dry hop when fermentation has a few points left to go, then you wont have any problems with oxidation, as the yeast is still working. Re: Dry hopping with Fuggles
My hops never sink when I dry hop. Nor do they seem to get anywhere near sinking.

Re: Dry hopping with Fuggles
even weighted with a load of glass marbles mine seemed to keep re-surfacing in the hop sock! Though I suppose that has the advantage of me giving them a good poke to sink them every time I go to check and obviously stirring in the 'goodness'196osh wrote:My hops never sink when I dry hop. Re: Dry hopping with Fuggles
Whenever I dry hop in the secondary (a glass carboy), the whole hops never seem to sink. I do most of my dry-hopping in the cask or corny keg, and I've always wonder if they ever sink either. The hops in the cask or keg stay there longer, so maybe at some point they do sink, but without a see-through keg it's difficult to tell.
Re: Dry hopping with Fuggles
My hops float on top too, then when I cold crash the beer the hops seem to sink - I don't know how that works!
I might throw them in the tail end of fermentation, maybe the churning action will rehydrate them enough so they sink.

Re: Dry hopping with Fuggles
the way i dry hop in the fv is.........i put the hops in a nylon bag from the aquatic shop, they have a draw string on them . lob in a stainless steel lump to this is attached a s steel wire which comes thru the lid the wieght makes it sink but it cant go to the bottom because the wire holds it .twice a day i pull the wire up and down to agitate the hops .this lets the wort flow in and out of the bag .no need to remove the lid at any time till your ready to transfermysterio wrote:My hops float on top too, then when I cold crash the beer the hops seem to sink - I don't know how that works!
