Mission impossible

Post by maxashton » Fri Feb 16, 2007 10:51 am

Hi guys.

This is more a request than an actual recipe.

My best mate (And brew buddy) is a lager drinker. He's a firm member of the aforementioned calsberg brigade. I'm a bitter drinker.

How can i gently introduce him to the world of bitters without either making him ill, or trying to force a pint of highland heavy down his gullet?

IMO, Golden ales are the way to gradually make lager drinkers realise the error of their ways  ... Deuchars IPA, Bitter and twisted, Exmoor Gold etc. etc. There are all grain recipes for all these beers, which have been made by forum members (I made a B&T clone awhile back).

As you're a kit brewer you could try Woodforde's Great Eastern, which I understand fits into this category, although I've not made it; it is often sold on the basis that it will appeal to lager drinkers. If your mate doesn't like it all is not lost as I understand it is a very nice ale anyway

Brew him a light ale
Recipes available if you want them :D
If he's a Carlsberg/Fosters/Stella drinker he will think it's a lager, then slowly change hops and malts until he's drinking full on IPA

I'm kit until i can build myself some grain gear, and placate SWMBO.

Woodforde's Great Eastern it is.

Thanks for your help again.

Tremendously nice chaps, the lot of you.

Yeah, i always buy new yeast. I'm going to use Safale for the batch i'm brewing tomorrow, and if it all goes well there i'll continue to use it for all my brews. Though i am strongly considering switching to White Labs or Wyeast.

Yer, i saw that.

How long will the yeast keep for in there?
Can it be pitched from the bottle (after warming to room temp)?
