First Ever Lager

Post by rimski » Mon Jan 10, 2011 11:09 pm

Hi All

I need your advice, I have never brewed a lager before and want peoples help

I only have WLP800 Pilsner liquid yeast and I have the following ingredients

10kg Lager Malt
5kg Premier Pilsner Malt
2kg Munich Malt
2kg Wheat Malt

Plus the standard ale malt types as well

I have the following hops that I think will work in a pilsner lager

Saaz
Cascade

I would love a basic pilsner recipe tbh as my first attempt

Cheers Neil

Hi rimski

I've got a German pilsner in the fv at the minute.

90% Pilsner malt
5% Munich
5% Carapils
1045 OG
28 IBU target
28g Northern Brewer At start of 60 min boil
20g Hersbrucker At 20 min from end of boil
20g Mittelfruh At 10 min from end of boil
20g Mittelfruh At flame out - 80C

I wouldn't use cascade in a pils. All saaz will go well in a BoPils. A basic recipe for Bohemian pils is just pilsner malt and saaz hops. Try 5Kg of malt for a 23L brew and aim for 40IBU on the hops.

I would make a 3-4L starter with the WLP800. Start with a pint of wort. After a couple of days step it up to 4L in a demijohn. Let it brew out for a week at 20C then crash cool in the fridge for a couple of days. Decant the beer and pitch the yeast. Brew at 10-12C.

How about this

5kg Pilsner Malt

100g Saaz - 60 mins
60g Saaz - 40 mins
60g Saaz - 20 mins
Protafloc Tablet 15 mins

Cool wort to 8c and pitch raising temp to 11c
Once primary has finished raise temp to 16c for 1 week and then crash cool to 0c for 3-4 weeks

Never done a lager before but this seems ok listening to them podcasts for advice 8)

Looks like more IPA levels of bitterness than lager.

I would have said that as well but if I brew it to style Bohemian Pils is between 35-45 IBU on Brewmate.

I will probably drop this a little TBH

But I am not sure atm
