100% Bramling Cross
100% Bramling Cross
Hi Guys
I'mfeeling experimental, what do people think of a 100% bramling cross ale - used for both bittering, flavouring and aroma?
any suggested amounts for a 5gallon batch?
thanks in advance!

Re: 100% Bramling Cross
I like this hop!
It was popular at one time and was bred from golding AFAIK...
Depending on what grain bill you intend to use I'd got for about 28IBU for a 1042-44 OG brew, don't over do the the late hops or it may be too curranty!

15g at 10mins in 5 gallons will be plenty
If you want a grain bill suggestion - try 92% Pale Malt 4% crystal 4% wheatmalt (or more crytal if you want it darker then you could go 6% crystal with 2% flaked barley)
Something I've considerred doing myself but am on a bit of a 'lager mission at the moment

Re: 100% Bramling Cross
I have done this and was disappointed. It was insipid and bland. BX just doesn't have much flavour IMO.
Amounts were
50g - full boil
30g - 5 mins
20g - dry hop
if interested.

Re: 100% Bramling Cross
Ah well - just to show that tastes differ!
Brewed October 2009:
Very similar grist to Manx Guy,
60 gms at 90 mins (AA=6.0%)
35 gms at 15 mins
10 gms at flameout
No dry hops.
4.5%, 11EBC, 43EBU
Yeast was re-claimed St Austell Proper Job.
"A light refreshing beer with a sharp but pleasant tang"
I will do something similar again but probably with WLP007 and water balanced towards chloride rather than sulphate.

Re: 100% Bramling Cross
Are there any single hop beers that don't work? And which are the best?
Re: 100% Bramling Cross
I think you have to do SHB in an aproprite style to the hop your using. For example I've done a steam beer that is 100% norther brewer! Fantastic in that style of Amber, lagery America beers, but I don't think it would work in an all pale English! I also find bram X better on darker beers such as Hawkshead Brodies prime, where it is used with cascade and fuggle!Chicken Dipper wrote:Are there any single hop beers that don't work? Ireckon an all BX dark ale or stout would be bang on!
Re: 100% Bramling Cross
If you're in an experimental mood then you should really overdo the late hops to get the full effect. Go on, empty the whole packet in thereI'm feeling experimental

Curranty? Oh Yes! but absolutely delicious.
I'd also suggest using 5-10% Munich.
Re: 100% Bramling Cross
I did a Blackberry & Oatmeal Stout in the Autumn made with all BX, which I was drinking last night and it just gets better and better. It's a velvety smooth brew with a bit of bite from the hops. Not sure if the aroma is from the blackberries or the bramling cross, but they go really well together. Only got a few bottles left.
I'll definately be doing this again later in the year.

Re: 100% Bramling Cross
Guys, What do you think to pairing BX with Nelson Sauvin - for a blackforest kind of action?

Go for it, do a 30/70 or 40/60 split on the steep hops with the lesser being weight being the NS just so you don't over-power the BXalwilson wrote:Guys, What do you think to pairing BX with Nelson Sauvin - for a blackforest kind of action?

Re: 100% Bramling Cross
Cheers Guys for your help! Here is my final draft of the recipe:
GrisT:
PALE MALT 3600g
WHEAT MALT 500g
MUNICH MALT 450g
CRYSTAL MALT 200g
Hops
@T-90
Bramling Cross 60g
@T-15
Bramling Cross 35g
@T-0
Bramling Cross 15g
Nelson Sauvin 10g
Now, ive got both Windsor and Nottingham yeast in the Freezer, what do you think is best suited to this? Windsor might finish up yielding a bit too much fruit with the blackforest action Im hoping for from the hops? So maybe nottingham is better?
cheers for your help
