Adnams Bitter?
I had a couple of pints of Adnams Bitter last night and really enjoyed it.
It had a really fresh hop flavour to it, if that makes sense.
My question is, how does the GW recipe compare to the real thing?

I've made GW's (my first AG brew so had a few issues) and am just conditioning Aleman's Effin Adnams. I love Adnams and think it is one of if not the best cask conditioned bitter in the UK. My GW effort was really simple and turned out OK but was a little short of Adnams at its best. Can't yet say what Effin Adnams is like but have high hopes for it. If you do GW's version then I recommend some dry hopping as mine lacked that beautiful aroma that Adnams has. I don't know if Adnams late hop or dry hop or indeed what hop/s they use if they do, but suspect they must introduce some before it goes out to the pub.
Having said all that I will certainly keep trying to match it because it is so good.

After reading thier site, they late hop and dry hop with fuggles as oz11 points out, but they also add some more fuggles to the cask!

How did this brew turn out?
I am going to brew some Southwold Bitter at the weekend and still haven't finalised my recipe.

Hi Monkeybrew, I'm looking forward to your results on this one as I'm quite a fan of Adnams. For the yeast I think I'd give the Windsor a try as it's supposed to have more character than most dried yeast and wil also leave a little sweetness - it should give 73% attenuation according to Beer Alchemy. Whitelabs Southwold Ale yeast WLP025 (which must be Adnams!) gives 71% attenuation so would be a little sweeter still.
I can't remember if I've already pointed these threads out to you so apologies if I'm repeating myself!
Steve Flack got some insider info from the head brewer at Adnams and gave some info in a couple of threads.
"Incidentally, the recipe for Adnams Bitter is pretty simple - pale malt, caramel colouring, fuggles for bittering, late and dry hop. The secret is the yeast. I've brewed this recipe with WLP002 which whilst a very nice beer isn't Adnams.
Broadside (cask) is similar - pale malt and caramel but is bittered with First Gold - there's no late hops. The bottled beer is a different recipe to the cask (not just a different strength)."

That's the trouble with this particular brew, there are so many varying recipes floating about, that it all gets a bit confusing.
I will be using the Aleman Effin Brewery grain bill, as its quite complex and interesting.
I am going to come up with my own hop schedule and see what happens.

No problem! Like I said, I have a soft spot for Adnams, they provided my first taste of decent beer when I moved to Lowestoft in the early eighties, it was a revelation after the kegged rubbish of the seventies - Youngers Tartan and similar. I don't think their beer is quite as good as it used to be but they still brew a nice pint! I'd love to come up with an Adnams Old style mild, one of my favourite winter beers!

It amazes me that it is late hopped with Fuggles! I always thought it was EKG. That totally blows any tasting credibility out of the beer.
