Stout Help with Recipe EBC issue
Hi All,
I have a brew day booked in for tomorrow but am having a problem with the EBC colour of the stout.
Basically 23ltr batch
Maris otter Pale malt 3900g - 5.9 EBC
Cara 220g - 5 EBC
Chocolate 140g - 1000 EBC
Brown 140g – 128.1 EBC
Black 140g - 1300 EBC
Wheat malt 220g – 4 EBC
Could someone enter the above into their computer program (I use Beersmith2) and let me know what EBC colour rating they calculate it at?
Cheers + Many Thanks

Re: Stout Help with Recipe EBC issue
I get an EBC of 138 using the Beer Engine but I didn't edit the grains so there are some slight differences in the individual EBCs

Re: Stout Help with Recipe EBC issue
Mmmm, this is driving me nuts,
I`ve been getting 49.80 all this afternoon using BeerSmith2, Ive just downloaded BEv1.09 (never used it until now) added in the % 81.9,4.6,2.9,2.9,2.9,4.6 Gravity of 1.046 not changing the EBC values and its giving me a value of 119.
According to the original recipe it should be 105 EBC so nearer the BE figure.
Anyone any ideas of why BS2 is half that?
Cheers

Did it with brewmate and got 46.3, unable to alter the EBC levels on the individual malts but they were all reasonably close to your figures.

Re: Stout Help with Recipe EBC issue
Thanks Froggit & brewnaboinne for testing out the figures, at least its not something I`ve messed up in BS2 whilst playing around with the program.
Ive noticed the all the stout profiles only go upto 78.8 on BS2?
Anyone any ideas why the difference?
Cheers

Barneey,
I think I've worked out what the problem is. I think Beersmith uses SRM not EBC.
You didn't say what your mash efficiency is but I've calculated the old fashioned way(with shock horror pen and paper) assuming 75% and come out with EBC of 121. This equates to SRM of about 45 I think.
And then Guinness has an EBC of about 200 so an SRM of 78.8 is about as black as blackstuff can get.

I initially thought the same myself yesterday but then the conversion figures didnt seem close enough using this convertor so i didnt post! Im assuming its accurate as its on the interwebbrewnaboinne wrote:Barneey,

*edit after just visiting beersmith website i discovered you can set the program to ebc or srm in the options tab, i think yours will be set to ebc, i cant find any issues regarding the ebc levels in the beersmith forum, i will continue searching.

Re: Stout Help with Recipe EBC issue
Cheers for the replies,
I`ve doubled checked BS2 in the options and it is set to EBC, all the readings are in shown in EBC in the design folder etc.
To triple check I changed the units to SRM which then reduced the value by approx 1/2.
So still something isnt quite right???

You could try posting the same question on the beersmith forum, they seem pretty helpful.

Only 1 reply on the BS website by a member, giving the result of 50 EBC, so still in limbo on this one, as I have the ingredients I`ll probadly just brew it and see what happens....
