I actually went ahead with the cold steep the other day and used 450 g of roasted barley in 1.8 litres of water and steeped for 24 hours. The result is a very nice subtle smooth roast flavour without it being dominant. I will be doing it again. I put the recipe together using the Port66 article that Oz posted.

Matt,

i assume that you got about 1.4 litres from the cold steep?

When did you add the water to the wort?

I didn't actually measure the amount. I squeezed the muslin slightly which the grain was held in to get a bit more out. I added to the last 5 minutes of the boil as advised in the Port66 article. It does explain the reasons why but I can't remember what they were.
