real ale in the old sense of ale due to hop shortage?
yeah i was wondering with the shortage of hops do you think people can start brewing without it and having ale in the truest sense (beer without the hops). I've never tried it so i don't know what it tastes like, wondering if anyone here has made it or had someone elses?

There are a few commercial ales without hops - the Scottish Kelpie and Fraoch and the Dutch Adriaan spring to mind - maybe try looking for clone recipes.

i'll have to give those beers a try then, i'm not that interested in making them just curious as to what it tastes like

I often use Ginger Root in my Pale beers 80g chopped up in 120 litre brew & added to the last 10- 15 mins of the boil most people dont' know i have ginger in them until i tell them a little bitterness & flavour in the background & saves a few hops goes well with Kent Goldings

Hello again just noticed this i have made a few of these beers after i had a few visits with the SCBrewers to the brewery all there beers were good except the Kelpie very clear beer with all that sea weed but didn't like the taste there spruse pine beer was lovely.I had a go at the heather ale living in scotland with all this free heather we were told the ingredients were Malt Barley Ginger Root Bog Myrtle & Heater flower tips first off i found that Bog Myrtle has a very strong medicine flavour & you neaded a hell of a lot of heather tips to get any bitterness & flavour.The best beers i made were with omitting the bog myrtle & adding hops to acheive around 15 ebu combined with the heather & ginger root i have since read that they have omitted the bog myrtle & now add some hops.BarryNL wrote:There are a few commercial ales without hops - the Scottish Kelpie and Fraoch and the Dutch Adriaan spring to mind - maybe try looking for clone recipes.
