Lining up for Friday 7th - Mad Boris Imperial Stout

Post by coatesg » Thu Nov 06, 2008 1:46 am

This Friday (having just managed to get rid of the last early morning brew - bottled at 1008), I'm lining up a brew for this Friday night - I've got a mate who's very interested in finding out and having a go at brewing, so I've an assistant for the evening :D

Based a bit on adm's Crazy Ivan 8) Yum!
EDIT - needed to make this a bit smaller to fit in the tun!
6kg Maris Otter
0.375g Amber
0.375kg Crystal
0.375kg Chocolate
0.375kg Roast Barley
0.375kg Wheat malt
0.25kg Soft Dark Brown Sugar (in boil)

Hops:
EKG: 100g (5.7%) at 90min
Target: 20g (9%) at 90min

Yeast: S-04 x 2
OG about 1080 if it all goes swimmingly. No idea what the FG will be - about 1020-25 I guess.

And, I hope it'll fit in my mash tun - could be a porridgey mash I think to avoid overflow (could be a tight one...). I reckon if it works out this will be just about right for Christmas drinking next year then

Good luck with it Graeme!

My tip from brewing my version would be to pitch a LOT of yeast at the start. Mr. Suggests 2 x 11g packs, but I'd probably up it to 3 packs of S04 just to be on the safe side and to allow complete peace of mind. I had some issues with fermentation stopping too early and had to repitch......

Cheers - I may have solved the possibility of underpitching by looking at the recipe and size of mashtun - I'm gonna have to reduce the size of the batch as I can't fit it all in the tun!
