Simple IPA?

Post by MightyMouth » Sat Jan 31, 2009 7:29 pm

Has anyone here done a simple IPA something like this?

46l batch
12.5kg Maris Otter
250g Fuggles or EKG 60 min
50g Fuggles or EGK at flame off

if so how did it turn out?

yep, that is a 'proper' IPA, I did one Dec 07, very similar hops, it is a great brew if you can hold off from drinking it for about 9 months to a year

I used extra pale Maris as well to replicate the 'White' malt they would have used 'in the day'

Definately use the EKG, the beer stripped paint and your inner cheeks when it was a few weeks old, but at a year it had mellowed beautifully, into something you just can't get by simply using less hops. It was still quite bitter but the flavour was full-on and very different to anything I had ever bought/brewed myself.

I did a few additions at 90mins, 30, 10 and steep, but there isn't really any point to the later additions as by the time you come to drink it they will have considerably faded, so whether these contributed to to the flavour or not I don't know.

I bottled my lot and I would recommend doing this. The amount of time you have to leave it I wouldn't trust a barrel or cornie, they are safe in brown bottles.

go for it, you'll not be disappointed....in errr....a year.. :D

Cheers Garth, don't know if I could hold off that long my beers tend to go as soon as they are carbonated. I thought that moving to 10 gallon brews would help I just find I brew half as often. I might try it anyway to see what happens :).

Sorry MM, I edited while you were posting

ah ha, that's the beauty about a beer like this, you could not physically drink it while it was young, so it keeps you off it for so long.

I gave one to my mate quite early on and the report I got back from him was, "well Garth, it was nice, but is it supposed to make your mouth numb?" :D :D :D

That looks quite a bit stronger and hoppier than what I was suggesting. Maybe I will have to do 2, one stronger and one less so.

Interestingly I have put your recipe into Beersmith and it comes back with different figures for IBU's and SG etc.

I think it's down to the efficiency, you have yours set at 75% whereas I set mine at the lower 70%, when I've upped mine to 75 I get 1.083 as well.

I can only put the hop difference down to a different hop IBU formula, I think mine is set on Tinseth, but at those values I don't think it'll matter much. :D

get it brewed MM, it's a err.....keeper!! :D

To be fair I don't think I would get 75% efficency with such a big beer so 70 is more like it anyway. I think I will brew it but I will have to brew something that I can drink quickly first. Any suggestion on simple Pale Ale with just Pale malt and hops? Possibly just scale back the hops and strength on this one?

Maybe something like this? nice thing about this one is if I buy 25kg of pale this will use 9 leaving 16 for your recipe plus it uses exactly 200gm of hops so no waste.

I'm not a expert on looking at recipe and saying it's right, but you can't go wrong with that one, Fuggles are a great hop, I'd steep even more of them if you have them. If not maybe move another 10-20g from bittering to the end?

I went through a stage of doing one hop beers, I did loads of them, quite a few of them were nothing special but I now know roughly what each hop gives and tastes like.

In fact you've sprurred me on to do another simple Fuggles/Goldings ale, I've been messing around with American and New World Hops for ages now, time for a change I think.

Thanks for the thoughts Garth, I personally don't think you can make bad beer anyway, as long as you keep within a few guidelines you wind up with drinkable beer. Personally I have yet to make a beer that I wouldn't be perfectly happy paying for in a pub and I have definitely made a few blunders but the beer has been great anyway.

That's a good thing when you can say that about your beers.

on another note what recipe did you use for the SNPA?

It's one of the only beers I would like to replicate as near as I can... I've done it about three times now and got a bit closer each time.

I used this recipe I found on the Northern Brewers Forum except I used Pilgrim in place of the magnum hops as I couldn't get any. I have to say it was pretty close. Oh and I used US05 yeast.
