AG#058 - Brewers Head

Post by SiHoltye » Tue Apr 07, 2009 5:38 pm

Hello,

On Good Friday I'm using Brewers Gold hops for the first time, in a recipe base I think might achieve a Dark Star Hophead style brew. Using the 'sweet pale ale' water profile from Grahams calc too. Prolly dry hop too.

Ingredients
23L @ 85% efficiency, 90min mash @ 67°C, 90min boil, water = sweet pale ale
Amount Item Type % or IBU
3.32 kg Maris Otter (5.9 EBC) Grain 97.00 %
0.10 kg Caramalt (26.0 EBC) Grain 3.00 %
32.00 gm Brewer's Gold [6.30 %] (90 min) Hops 24.6 IBU
65.00 gm Brewer's Gold [6.30 %] (1 min) Hops 2.0 IBU
25.00 gm Brewer's Gold [6.30 %] (0 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops -
Hopback Yeast-Ale (dregs of 4 bottles SL in 400ml 1.040 DME for 1 week, then slurry into 4L of 1.040 DME for 1 week)

Beer Profile
Est Original Gravity: 1.040 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.009 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 4.03 %
Bitterness: 26.6 IBU
Est Color: 7.7 EBC

Anyone got any comments on Brewers Gold hops in a single hop brew? I can't remember when I last had Crouch Vales' beer. I'm not trying to make that, just remember if the hops were citrussy/piney, or whatever.

The beer is brewed (and being drunk now) and I think the hops have similarities with Challenger in that I'm getting a spicyness. The yeast should assist that as I think it's a pretty clean one. I think this hop might work in a lager.

Really pleased with the pint overall, just not the greatest recipe of all time. It's not subtle. :)

Hope the weather is as good where you are as it is here Si as it's perfect for that kind of beer. I'm actually drinking Hopback Summer Lightning but no immediate brew in the future means the poor boys are getting washed down the drain.
Planning - Not for a long while

Fermenting - I'm Done

Bottle Maturing - Hobgoblin, Fullers ESB, American Stout, TOP, Fullers London Porter, Bandini Black IPA

Drinking - Still...Whiskey

Weather is great. Shame about the cannon fodder, there's always more where that came from though
