Turbo Cider help
Turbo Cider help
forgive a newb, i have had a trail thru but cant find an answer...the Q (s!) is this:
I want to do a TC, using a standard fermenting bucket...about 40pints....
will that be ok?
put apple juice in, totally apple juice, or do i dilute?....add yeast...i was going to use a wine yeast..ok?
( i want it strong, so am gonna add some honey and a little sugar,,,,,)
and then ferment as usual? wait til its sediment has sunk (about a week or so?)
then bottle with a little priming sugar, for a little fizz...
is that all I need to do? and also, anyone with experience of doing it like this, any recommendations for additions to it....
thanks guys

Re: Turbo Cider help
Add a cup of tea for tannins, and a bramley apple grated to it. Wine yeast will make a very dry cider, because it will chomp through any residual sugars present.Popey wrote:forgive a newb, i have had a trail thru but cant find an answer...the Q (s!) is this:

Don't dilute the apple juice as this will in turn dilute the ABV of any final product. The honey and sugar are both good idea's.
But for much better advice go here

Re: Turbo Cider help
Now then Popey,
Im a relative newbie too so dont take anything as gospel. Tried a turbo cider 5ltr experiment the other week, with 5 ltr lidl cheapo apple juice ( not the Apple Drink either as have seen on You tube ) however it was from concentrate, 500gm of honey, one cup of strong tea and some youngs cider yeast. I did boil some of the juice as to destroy preservatives however have read of people not doing so and it not affecting the brew adversley.
It didnt take long to ferment however took a little longer then a wine to clear (maybe a teaspoon of pectic enzyme would have helped here???) bottled the lot and to be honest its quite nice, very palatable and absolute rocket fuel! Am going to try it again soon with some champagne yeast to see if that alters the flavour at all might even do a 5 gallon batch this time. good luck!!

Re: Turbo Cider help
OK ta all. Not wishing to dismiss any of the pointers, but a delivery i ordered has not arrived, and i'm an impatient bugger, so heres what i did.
sterliised everthing with tesco my baby sterilising fluid. (78p 1.5 litres)
rinsed very very well
17 litres of Tesco pure AJ from concentrate (57p per litre)
about 1kg of normal white sugar, dissolved in a coupla litres of the juice, zapped in microwave til dissolved
same with a good serving spoon of honey, along with 8 cloves, this then strained into 20L FV
i tsp citric acid
mixed all together
sprinkled on champagne yeast
left 15mins, stirred then left to stand
in a week or so, gonna bottle into pint bottles with half tsp of castor sugar for fizz
whaddya reckon?

Re: Turbo Cider help
i make the same mistakes time and time again, and this'll be the last...lack of use of hyrometer.
I can't keep the FV particularly warm in my place, so my Q is this...the "frothing" has stopped, and there are no bubbles rising, so, d'ya reckon this is ready to bottle? there seems very little sediment at the bottom.
It's been in the FV since last Weds. so thats 6 days now. Long enough for a TC?
Also, I note some people add a second batch of juice. Why is this, and should I do it?
Cheers!

Re: Turbo Cider help
Hey Popey, have you got a air lock on the top? How often does it bubble?
The second lot of juice can be used during bottling, this is the extra sugar needed for the second fermentation, this makes it fizzy! =)
I'm looking at mine now, it's bulling every 30 seconds, which is still too much, last time I bottled it around this time and the caps flew off alot in the middle of the night.
Take a look at my old post: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=16049
I'll add my current TC to it now.

Re: Turbo Cider help
heya.
its just in a bucket style FV
it seems to have stopped bubbling, thers no sediment that i can see......so....ready to bottle? i was gonna just prime with a little sugar rather than add juice....whaddya r=think?

Re: Turbo Cider help
right....update...its still/started to fizz again, prob due to it being warmer? it smells cidery (very nice BTW!)
so am i correct in saying, leave until stops fizzing in FV, then bottle in primed bottles ( a little apple juice instaed of sugar? if so, how much juice approx for a pint bottle?

Re: Turbo Cider help
TC still in the FV, still has a fizzing, but not mad....do i still need to wait to bottle? is this an overly long time?
Re: Turbo Cider help
I've got my third TC in a 5l plastic water bottle (Tesco). Went in on 4th April and blew it's top
It is still fizzing nicely today, so that's 16 days and still going strong. The first two both took over 2 weeks to finish fermenting as well.

Re: Turbo Cider help
Hi, you need to maybe PM MartialAnt for really good TC advice; he does em all the time and hes a demon at em.
When i asked him how he ferments he told me a month in primary - so youre about there - then another month barrelled/bottled to settle out. So i would suggest leaving them a few weeks for them to be really good.
Good luck fella.
