Idea's for a Michael Jackson Commemorative Ale

Post by Tequilla6 » Sat Jun 27, 2009 2:52 pm

Hi,

Due to the sad departure of Michael Jackson and because my wife is a Motown fan who was heavily influenced by the music and had a rapport with Michael Jackson and his music when he first came on the scene with the Jackson 5 and has never missed a concert tour in the UK, I thought I would honour his life and brew a Michael Jackson Commemorative Ale for both him and the wife. [-o<

I would like this to be a serious discussion and so have posted in the "recipe" section as opposed to the "Tap room".

My initial idea is that it should be a dark ale or Stout and trying to think of something that would remind us of Michael and his music. "Black and White" was the obvious one but I was thinking about using one of his older songs like ABC where I could use a trio of hop such as Amarillo, Boadicea and Crystal. Any suggestions on some more good hop trio's beginning with ABC? or other suggestions on song links etc that may influence the ingredients list :?:

This will be brewed and I am interested in what the fellow brewers may come up with. :!:

Cheers

Just be careful not to let it get near the kids.

No matter what you brew it's sure to have a bad nose.

Glad to see I'm getting some informative and helpful posts in helping me to create a beer for my wife. As opposed to my concerns that I may just get a minority of crass, opinionated comments and jokes based on ill informed information from the general slanderous gossip out there in the public arena, on a very sad time for both my wife and I'm sure Michael's family.

Keep up the good work guys...

Well,

As no-one really came up with any sensible suggestion on this one I have decided to keep with my original idea and do a dark Porter recipe called "ABC" at an ABV of 5% of course.

Recipe: Michael Jackson Commemorative ABC Ale
Brewer: Catfish Brewery
Style: Robust Porter
TYPE: All Grain

Recipe Specifications
--------------------------
Batch Size: 25.00 L
Boil Size: 31.26 L
Estimated OG: 1.052 SG
Estimated Color: 68.3 EBC
Estimated IBU: 27.8 IBU
Brewhouse Efficiency: 80.00 %
Boil Time: 90 Minutes

Ingredients:

------------
Amount Item Type % or IBU
4.30 kg Pale Malt (2 Row) UK MO (5.0 EBC) Grain 78.18 %
0.50 kg Crystal Malt - Dark (200.0 EBC) Grain 9.09 %
0.30 kg Oats, Malted (2.0 EBC) Grain 5.45 %
0.25 kg Chocolate Malt (1050.0 EBC) Grain 4.55 %
0.15 kg Black Malt (1300.0 EBC) Grain 2.73 %

35.00 gm Boadicea [5.66 %] (90 min) Hops 21.3 IBU
15.00 gm Crystal [4.90 %] (10 min) Hops 1.6 IBU
15.00 gm Amarillo [9.50 %] (10 min) Hops 3.1 IBU

1 Pkgs SafAle English Ale (DCL Yeast #S-04) Yeast-Ale

1.00 items Protofloc (Boil 15.0 min) Misc
3.86 gm Calcium Chloride (Mash 60.0 min) Misc
5.00 gm Potassium Metabisulphite (Mash 1.0 min) Misc
6.71 gm Salt (Mash 60.0 min) Misc
30.00 L Porter Water

Mash Schedule: Single Infusion, Full Body, No Mash Out
Total Grain Weight: 5.50 kg
----------------------------
Single Infusion, Full Body, No Mash Out
Step Time Name Description Step Temp
90 min Mash In Add 14.33 L of water at 74.1 C 66.0 C

My thoughts on the Porter were confirmed when I found out how little of my "Toasted Oatmeal Stout" I had left  Not a lot so need a replacement. and I want to try the dark crystal malt and malted oats I have in stock looking for a brew to join. The decision on the hops was based on the song, but I have never used the Crystal & Amarillo before together although I know the Amarillo is quite a hard hitting hop flavour and aroma. I have seen Cascade and Amarillo suggested together on the forum in the Four shades of Stout recipe and the Boadicea is a Challenger replacement acording to Barley Bottom and as I'm using it just for the bitterness, it should be OK in a fruity Porter/Stout especially as I'm using Sal-04 yeast. Kept the bitterness down on this one to 26 EBU. If the Flavour hops come across too strong this is going to be an interesting brew. I only hope that the Citrus notes stay a little more in the background just enhancing the fruity tendency of the Ale and I hope to get some slight spice from the hops too.

As this is my first attempt to craft a recipe from scratch  , If anyone has any helpful comments or suggestions on the actual recipe ingredients listed and how they will work together please feel free to comment.

Thanks in advance

sorry your thread degenerated mate, but I don't think there's that much love out there for him on JBK!
on the plus side, the recipe looks interesting, a porter sounds like the way to give him the send off you're wanting.
Let us know how it goes on, MJ aside, it should be a nice brew!

good luck!

I'm trying very hard not to be drawn into this discussion, but I'm having a hard time trying to understand the reason why commemorating the pop legend that Michael Jackson was should be so alien to a number of posters here. His music and his showmanship whilst not to everyone's taste certainly changed the face of the Pop Video in the same way the Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody did and was very influential to many of the newer people within the music industry who saw him as an inspiration. He even got an award for his support of charities that helped people overcome alcohol and drug abuse. I personally have no issue singing his achievements and commemorating his life and enjoying the timeless songs that he has given us . I also am happy to morn his sad and untimely departure from this life.

Surly just because you drink beer, it does not mean you cannot have some respect and decency for someone who has just died, even if you did not like or connect with that person :?:

well

I said you wanna be startin' somethin'
You got to be startin' somethin'
I said you wanna be startin' somethin'

your abc sounds good but leave it ''il saturday

Now the weekend's come it's time for fun

get up early and expect a long brew day

And I'll be workin'
From sun up to midnight

now remember when sparging

Don't stop 'til you get enough

and make sure you mature it

For forty days and forty nights

and when you taste it, it

Ain’t So Bad At All

just remember to serve it real cold, then

Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
the evil of the chiller

no help on a brew though :D
