S-33 takes off like a rocket, its a very active yeast and one of my favourites.

Basically, flocculation is the yeast dropping down to the bottom of the vessel after fermentation, leaving your beer nice and clear.

It depends how clear your beer is, and how clear you want it.

My philosophy is:

Check after primary. If it's not as clear as I want it, bung in some gelatine. After 2/3 days, if it's still not as clear as i want it, bung in some beerbrite.

Haven't needed the BB for some time though.

oh if im fermenting in the kitchen in a fv with just a lid with a wee gap in the seal will the odurs and aromas from cooking not taint the lager n the end

Yeah i just buy the Dr. Oetker stuff from the supermarket. Dissolve one sachet in about half a pint of water, let it cool a bit (not too much or it might set!) and then add it to the beer.

My main reason for trying the gelatin first is price.
1 sachet of gelatin = 10p (box of 6 sachets = 60p)
1 sachet of beerbrite - £1

Gelatin seems to do the job just fine. My initial problems with hazy beers were (i believe) due to not boiling for long enough, and nothing to do with fining.

I wouldn't think so.
