Hawkshead Brodie's Prime

Post by leedsbrew » Thu Jan 07, 2010 10:48 am

I'm into my darker ales and stouts at the moment and want to try something different. I love all the Hawkshead beers so wanted to give Brodie's Prime a go. I can't seem to find
anything on the net other than the info from the Hawkshead site so had a tinker in BeerAlchemy and came up with this

Code: Select all

Fermentables
Ingredient	Amount	%	MCU	When
UK Pale Ale Malt 3.429 kg 75.0 % 3.9 In Mash/Steeped
UK Medium Crystal (120EBC) 0.457 kg 10.0 % 7.9 In Mash/Steeped
UK Wheat Malt 0.457 kg 10.0 % 0.3 In Mash/Steeped
UK Chocolate Malt 0.229 kg 5.0 % 39.0 In Mash/Steeped

Hops
Variety	Alpha	Amount	IBU	Form	When
UK Fuggle 3.9 % 45 g 21.4 Loose Whole Hops 90 Min From End
UK Bramling Cross 6.0 % 35 g 11.9 Loose Whole Hops 15 Min From End
US Cascade 7.6 % 15 g 2.6 Loose Whole Hops 5 Min From End

Yeast
White Labs WLP005-British Ale
Wondered what we all thought of it!?

Cheers

Never tried it, but looked at their website and that beer sounds very interesting. Now you have made me add yet another beer to my growing list of stuff to brew #-o

Reading the tasting notes and looking at the hops, I came up with pretty much the same as you, but with less Bramling Cross and More Cascade and maybe dark Crystal in the mash (i notice they use it in other brews). That's just my opinion; as i said, i have not tried it. Whatever you decide to go with, let us know how it turns out.

It is a fantastic beer, if you ever see it in a pub or bottle I would recomend it. I was thinking about dark crystal (as i have some in stock) and dropping the chocolate a bit. I'm thinking this would up the sweetness and drop the roasted a bit? I recon the WLP005 will help retain some of the residual sweetness, but not too much (i really like wlp005, It goes very well in my riggwelter clone! :D )

As for the hop schedule, as i remember it does have more of the spicy/black current flavour than citrus (but it has been a while since I had a pint!)

I'll have a play around with it over the next week or so and keep this post updated!

Cheers

Asked the brewery for some advice and pointers. The hops we know and the grist is pale, crystal, chocolate and rolled oats. I have never used oats, so this will be a first for me. I will probably use WLP 023 as i have some in stock.

Awesome news jubby. Did you email them today? That's a quick repomce if so! I've never had much
luck with breweries repomdong to emails.

I've never used oats before but i believe they give a velvety mouthfeel that will be fantastic in this beer.

Wlp023 sounds like a sous choice. Will you be bottling this? If so do you fancy a bottle swap to compair results?

Cheers

Yes, emailed today. Very helpful chap, he didn't want to give too much away which is understandable, but i think it's just enough to have a reasonable bash at it. I always find a good helping of grovelling helps when talking with brewers :D . Having said that, it's good for customer relations if they answer, even if it's to say sod off. I will be keeping a look out for this beer from the cask.

I'll be bottling some, so a bottle swap would be great. I will probably brew within the next week or two and i will fill a small 330ml bottle for sending. I'm not being stingy but it makes postage cheaper.

I forgot to mention, the brewery recommended bittering with First Gold. So i assume that the other hops are all late.

I will be in touch when i need to post. Good luck with it, check out this post on using rolled oats: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5700&p=75012&hilit= ... ats#p75012

I have decided to go with this for 23 litres, using WLP023. The hop schedule will be a bit OTT when compared with the real thing, but there ain't no accountants in this brewery :!: :!:

UK Rolled Oats 0.550 kg 9.9 % 0.5 In Mash/Steeped

UK Chocolate Malt 0.130 kg 2.3 % 18.0 In Mash/Steeped
German Carafa III 0.070 kg 1.3 % 11.3 In Mash/Steeped

Hops

UK First Gold 7.8 % 25 g Loose Whole Hops First Wort Hopped
UK Fuggle 4.7 % 15 g Loose Whole Hops 15 Min From End
UK Bramling Cross 5.2 % 15 g Loose Whole Hops 15 Min From End
US Cascade 7.6 % 15 g Loose Whole Hops 5 Min From End

Looking good matey! :D When are you doing it? I like the look of adding Carafa III, I find myself adding it to my brews a lot recently! Good call! :D

Cheers Lb. The Carafa 3 should give the roasty notes from tasting reviews that i've read, without the bitter taste. There is a youtube tasting if you're interested, just type 'Hawkshead brodie's prime'.
They mention smokey tastes too, but i don't have any smoked malt. Anyway, you can get too wrapped up trying to clone beers. I think it's better to just aim for good beer.

I am aiming to brew on Monday, but i am waiting for the Bramling X from Barleybottom (didn't order until Thursday #-o ) So might be Tuesday.
