Light Ale

Good morning my fellow brewers.
was just wondering if any of you fine people had a recipe for Light Ale.
its been something i have been wanting to have a go at for a while
but find a recipe has been a little harder than expected so if anyone could help i would be greatfull

A couple of questions.
Do you brew extract or all grain?
Do you mean light color, light strength or light hoppiness?
Do you want a Bud light type beer in ale form?

hi there well ill brew with wot ever i need too . The taste that im
trying to achieve is something close to a light ale the was brewed by
courage brewry. Been looking for it or something simular in taste but as of
yet i haven't found anything close although manns did brew it too.
There is nothing like the taste of light and bitter its great.
Basicaly its a very light ale in colour and taste.

I think that its going to be triall and error mind you trial not a bdb thing lol just a
good excuse to brew more lol

i brew from extract as a rule but to achive this light ale ill do wot ever it takes

That's right. I brew all grain and it wouldn't do him any good to suggest an all grainer if he's a extract man. (Extract man: a good blues song title?)

I haven't had either of those so I'm not able to say "brew this" and you'll get what you are looking for, but if I were to brew a light ale with a nice hoppiness to it I would go with one of my bitter recipes.

Bone Idle bitter (5 gallons)
82% maris otter pale malt
12% crystal 30
6% victory malt
1 ounce challenger @ 8% for 45 minutes
1/2 ounce goldings @ 5% for 20 minutes
!/2 ounce goldings for 3 minutes (maybe)
Mash at 150 F for 45 minutes

trade extra pale extract for the m. o. and steep the crystal and victory for 20 minutes or so at 150 and you got it. Or use just amber extract.

I try to brew this around aug-sept, depending on when the goldings in my back yard are ready to harvest. If you can get some hops fresh off the vine the hoppiness is fantastic.

I know what you mean by "light ale", I have never been a fan, and the only recipes I know of are a couple of Dave Line recipes from about 30 yrs ago which feature in "Brewing Beers Like Those You Buy". I haven't posted them here as I believe the book is still in print and I don't want to run foul of any copyright laws. They really don't look very promising though. If you are really keen I can send them to you.

First beer I ever drank was Light Ale, made by Whitbread. Used to love that, wouldn't mind trying it again or having a bash at making a clone of it.
Wonder what a recipe for that would be?

Is there a particular light ale that you've had that you'd like to aim for in taste?

Reading the reviews seems to point at caramel tones with a dry finish. Not sure what hops Courage use in their best. I'm pretty sure Directors is the same recipe as Best so maybe the Pale is derived from the same but with less dark malts?
