I have recently been drinking York Brewery's Yorkshire Terrier and thought I would try and make something similar.
Does anybody have any recipes/ideas?
It's a nice golden ale which isn't too hoppy and has a lovely malt/sweet balance to the hops. I've been trying to brew an ale like this for sometime but can't seem to get body and complexity to the beer like this beer has despite mashing at higher temperatures, so it must be in the ingredients.
Do you think it has a bit of biscuit malt as well Maris Otter and Crystal with hops like challenger and fuggles? I'm also considering using Munich malt for a more malty flavour.
What do people think?

Re: Recipe for Yorkshire Terrier
If i were brewing a beer with a good malty taste and some sweetness i might consider 25% munich, 10% crystal.
Re: Recipe for Yorkshire Terrier
Thanks Dave-o. I was planning on using equal quantities of MO and Munich but then it looks like it will get darker than I want. So I'll try those ratios and put some carapils in too. There are just too many combinations and not enough brewing time!
What about hops?

Re: Recipe for Yorkshire Terrier
I'd say your own suggestion of challenger and fuggles is a good one.
Re: Recipe for Yorkshire Terrier
I'd be pretty sure Yorkshire Terrier doesnt have munich or carapills in it
Re: Recipe for Yorkshire Terrier
What would you suggest Borodave?
It's hard because I'm still getting used to various malts and I'm never sure whether breweries use them or whether it would get too expensive for them to use a varied malt bill. So I'm still try to work out whether its just a case of messing around with the quantities of crystal to get a more malty profile and mashing at higher temps or whether I should be looking at adding malts like Munich malt which is apparently more malty than MO.
I'll just have to experiment by making lots of beer. What a shame.

Re: Recipe for Yorkshire Terrier
I'd guess they just use MO and crystal, but I dont really know to be honest. Not very helpfull I know

Re: Recipe for Yorkshire Terrier
Yep - I agree. I think this will be MO and Crystal, nothin like Munich in there. I've actually done a 'meet the brewer' event with York and chewed the fat with the head brewer and I can say one thing - they are very no-nonsense. I think it will be a simple - why not try a 85-15% split on MO and Crystal and hop with Goldings - all the way - single hop - try that, might be close enough for you.
