Fuggle or Challenger for the dry hop

Post by JammyBStard » Sun Jan 16, 2011 2:17 pm

My Latest Pale Ale has been in the FV for a week now and it's time to dry hop.
I wanted this one to be all about bitter finish and Hoppy nose so I have no 30min hop additions.

I have in pellet form Fuggle, Challenger, and "USA High Alpha" (Chinook I think)

I was thinking between 25g and 50g of Fuggle, It's a well knwn Dry-hop; but I've never used it before.
I was wondering about the Challenger; has anyone tried this as a dry hop?

I'd use the chinook for dry hopping with that recipe as shown! Go for an ounce at least.

Just out of interest; Why do you say Chinook? I'm always wondering If there's some rule of thumb to hop pairing

I'd go for Chinook too, based on the fact that it looks like an american style ale. I prefer to make English style ales with English hops, and US ones with US hops etc...

But Challenger is for dry hopping, my local Ringwood brewery use it quite a bit.

Generally you want to go for the oily aromatic hops for dry hopping. Chinook probably fits that bill the most.

The thing with the chinook is I've dry hopped with it before and it can be very dominant; I've never used the Fuggle or the Clallanger before.

I'll probably go with the Chinook; But I've set up a little experiment with the other two just to see what they're like:

I'll report back.

You've already got chinook, aurora and bobek in there, and so I feel challenger and fuggle would be a bit dominated by them - but give it a go if you fancy it. The recipe is very American and I feel chinook as a dry hop would compliment that well.

after a good sniff and sip I would inexpertly say:

Fuggle imparted a Grassy/Green sort of taste, and the Challanger gave a Fruty, slightly sweet note.

I wen't with 30g of the Challanger in the end; I apriciate all your +'s for the Chinook but I wanted to avoid it. there's a load of flavor from the late addition Styrian's i didn't want getting swamped by the chinook.

It should be ready for a taste in a week or so. can't wait.
