HELP WITH NORMANS RECIPE ALMANAC
HI ALL
been taking a butchers at the recipes here in normans almanac and have a question about the hop additions they all seem to be a 90 minutes addition at the start of boil is this correct or are they stepped at 30 minute intervles?
just want to clarify
thanks (twb) richard

well mate thats what i thought
when i was playing with beersmith it told me this .
mash in 17.47ltr water @77.0c
45 min @70.0c
mash out 6.99ltr@91.5c
sparge with 36.76 ltr @75.6c
then add water to acheive a vol of 44ltrs
now all that for a single infusion full body batch sparge seems to be bloody confusing .
to make a 36 ltr batch .
what would you do and which parts dont mater at this stage.
as i see this above it wouls only equate to a 60 min mash ??
i dont really care for beersmith just though it was iteresting as ppl swear buy it . but for an english ale this sounds a bit under done ./
?

Great post Richard I know where you're coming from as I under estimated the water on my first brew.
Based on the above logic I was working out volumes for a 23l batch
23l + 5l =27l (desired volume plus 5l for losses to hops etc.)
(27/85) * 100 = 31.7l (pre boil volume required allowing for a 90 minute boil)
That said if I have a 4kg grain bill that's 10l of mash water so theoretically I need 21.7l sparge water in order to achieve my 31.7l pre boil volume.
Does this sound about right?
Hopefully I'll be firing up the barefoot brewery this weekend and want to see if I can get this one spot on. I'm not sure what I'll be making yet but hopefully my copy of Marc Ollossons Real Ales for the home brewer should arrive by then to give me a bit of guidance

but it is all starting to come together now the tutorial is great nice and easy to follow thanks J-P for you input it is good to see that there was someone else out there had the same question .
the water bit always confused me abit as i did not have an average on grain absorbtion .
hope i get it right and hope your brew day is a smooooooth one.
