Re: Gelatin
I haven't ever seen a recipe that called specifically for the use of gelatin.......... but that said, this one should do you fine
http://www.waitrose.com/shop/ProductVie ... ne+Sachets
You shouldn't need more than a teaspoon of the stuff heated in a teacups worth of water and it will help drop the yeast out of your beer to make it bright
Cheers

Re: Gelatin
I was skeptical the first time I used gelatin in my keg - used one sachet in the xmas bitter when priming - but it dropped absolutely crystal and set the sediment in a semi solid jelly in the bottom
It was undetectable in the brew so go ahead and use it as you see fit

Re: Gelatin
Don't use it if you're bottling - it leaves an unstable sediment. Use for barrels only.
Re: Gelatin
+1 I have only used gelatin once and it left a very mobile sediment in the bottles - a right PITA! I have now learnt to live with beers that are less than crystal clear but I can appreciate why people might want to use these finings.Jim wrote:Don't use it if you're bottling - it leaves an unstable sediment. Re: Gelatin
Thanks very much for the replies guys.
May be I will give it a go, it will be for kegging
not bottling (thank's Jim).

Ozzy, I notice that one contains beef will it leave a taste?
only mention this as there is a vegetarian alternative.

No aftertaste mate I promise you. All real gelatine is made from collagen derived from animalsSwiller wrote:

Re: Gelatin
How can you be sure it's just beef , another scandal? On a serious note there are a number of proprietary products that contain it e.g I use a product called Kwik Clear for fining in keg & bottle and have always been pleased with the results.Ozzy, I notice that one contains beef will it leave a taste?

Re: Gelatin
Anyone know if veggie gel used for making vegetarian jelly dessert would work to clear beer instead of regular gelatine.
Most beers I just let time do the work of clearing but sometimes poor flocculating yeasts need a hand.
Most answers are correct, more kegs, patience etc but no answer for veg gel.
I may have to do an extra gallon on next brew and put it in a demijohn with veg gel to find out.

I don't know the answer to your question but what you propose would be interesting to learn about anyway. If you could take pictures and post the result I'm sure it would be very welcome information.

Re: Gelatin
Will do that, when I next have a beer that would benefit from the addition. I don't want to experiment on a whole 5 gallons and potentially destroy a days brewing effort.
I don't follow a vegetarian diet but have friends who do, they often ask questions about ingredients in the beer I foist on them.
If they knew how much livestock (insects) there are in harvested hops, they shouldn't be worried about a bit of residual if any gelatine.
I recently used leaf gelatine as I couldn't get hold of powdered gelatine its a bit more more expensive but I noticed it doesn't smell as awful and dissolves more easily, it was added to the keg and I'm waiting to see the results.

Re: Gelatin
If you got it from the Malt Miller I can vouch for how good it is. Make sure you use preboiled water circa 65c.

Re: Gelatin
It was Dr Oetker leaf gelatin raided from the baking ingredients cupboard, I'm sure she'll never find out.
The packets are 13g 8 leaves. I used 4. On the basis 4 sets a pint of liquid, the same as a packet of powdered gelatin would.
The Malt Miller's sheets are 100g packets 10 sheets each 10g. I wonder if half a sheet would be sufficient.
