Time expired yeast

Post by Fido97 » Mon Apr 06, 2020 7:53 am

I've got 2 packs of dried yeast exactly 1 year out of date; been kept in the fridge. Has anyone used old yeast before/will it still function correctly? Nottingham by the way. Thnks.

I used 2 packs of wilko yeast 2 days ago that I've had kicking around for years in the brew fridge. BB December 2018. It was bubbling nicely next morning 👍

Me too. I used a packet of Notty yesterday afternoon Best before date Dec 18. Had been stored in a fridge since purchase. Rehydrated and pitched, nice rocky head this morning. :D

If refrigerated dry yeast only loses about 4% vitality a year. You'll be fine.

I think refrigeration is the key. I successfully used a packet of Safale SO4 that had been at the bottom of the fridge for nearly 4 years. Made up a starter first then pitched in a stout kit (only made to 24 pints no added sugars) turned out okay.

I'd just have a lower threshold to use both packs for the one batch, especially if at the higher end of range for OG or volume of 1 pack.

I recently brewed two different batches with Muntons regular yeast that had dates of Nov 2016. Both turned out good.
