Olicana Pale Ale

Post by clarets7 » Sat Oct 15, 2022 4:56 pm

I bought 100g of Olicana hops on a whim 6 months ago, finally got round to using them a couple of weeks ago.

AG133 - Olicana Pale
English Pale Ale

Recipe Specs
----------------
Batch Size (L): 20.0
Total Grain (kg): 3.750
Total Hops (g): 100.00
Original Gravity (OG): 1.044
Final Gravity (FG): 1.010
Alcohol by Volume (ABV): 4.50 %
Colour (EBC): 13
Bitterness (IBU): 33
Brewhouse Efficiency (%): 74
Boil Time (Minutes): 60

Grain Bill
----------------
3.600 kg Pauls Pale Whale Pale Malt (96%)
0.150 kg Simpsons T50 Crystal (4%)

Hop Bill
----------------
40.0 g Olicana Leaf (5% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (2 g/L)
30.0 g Olicana Leaf (5% Alpha) @ 10 Minutes (1.5 g/L)
30.0 g Olicana Leaf (5% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (1.5 g/L)

Mash at 66°C for 60 Minutes.
Fermented at 20°C with NBS West Coast

Just tried a bottle now and pleasantly surprised, similar to the Ghost Ship (in cans) I was drinking yesterday - but obviously better :D

clarets,
Sounds good, Cheers! =D>
Didn`t fancy dry hopping as well with some of the Olicana?
Did the fruity taste come though?

I did think of dry hopping - unfortunately after I had used them all #-o

Fruity taste does come through, and these were 2019 harvest hops. I will definitely look out for more of these in the future.

I like 40/30/30 hop ratio. A favourite of mine with can cascade. Getting a bit carried away lately, since I bought a one man hop mountain of Ernest.

Interesting you got such a good 'fruit' impression given the 'citrousy' element of the oils supposedly evaporates at anything above 69C from what I've read. Think I'll give them a go when next ordering.

The '0 minutes' addition was after temperature had dropped to below 80C. Left there for 20 odd minutes then cooled with immersion cooler. However, I'd started this brew later than normal and ran out of time, so it wasn't actually drained into the fermentor until the next morning, so sitting at around 20C on all the hops for over 12 hours. Maybe that's the way to do it :-k - I know Timothy Taylors are supposed to leave Landlord sitting on the hops for a few hours.

Hmm. Warm hop extraction. I have wondered before about a sub 60c hop hold for 3-4

Anyone got any thoughts / links?
