Gales Best Bitter

Post by bitter_dave » Sat Mar 25, 2006 9:57 am

I've not made this, so I can only vouch for the fact that it tastes mighty fine in the basketmaker's arms! As I mentioned before, it is less bitter than LP - it has an IBU of 23 compared with 30; this would seem to place the bitterness in the range of a mild.

Anyway, recipe from Wheeler for 23 litres

OG 1042
Racking gravity 1009

Marris Otter Pale Malt (3,650gm)
Crystal Malt (200gm)
Torrefied Wheat (125gm)
Black Malt (36gm)
White Sugar (210gm)
Challenger hops (21gm) - start of boil
Fuggles hops (24gm) - start of boil
Goldings hops (10gm) - last 15 mins of boil
Irish moss (10gm) last 15 mins of boil.

+ whatever primings / finings you use. W says if made well it won't require them, but if you want to use them he says to use 50-100gm of sugar or malt extract for priming.

Mash at 66C for 90 mins, boil for 90 mins.
