Sorachi Ace Hops

Post by monkeymullins » Mon Oct 12, 2015 6:38 pm

Any used these hops? Thinking I may use them to dry hop the Coopers Irish Stout. Apparently they have a lemon & coconut taste or am I best leaving this kit alone as Iv heard it's a good kit without messing about with it

Yes, I've used Sorachi Ace. I get what people mean about the lemon flavour, but I get a weird lime leaf, lemongrass, basil kinda thing going on, a lot like Pad Thai. I even used it in a dark ale, somewhat like a stout, as you're suggesting. Very unusual but very tasty. Most people reserve Sorachi Ace for pale ales, lagers, and saisons (which can be great too) but I think they hold up well to more caramelly, toasty, roasty grain complexity. I got a lot of compliments on that beer, for what it's worth.

So, if you're going for a really unexpected twist on a traditional stout, go for it. But don't expect it to be anywhere near true-to-style, competition-wise or anything...
