Muntons brown ale kit

Post by Rookie » Sun Sep 17, 2017 4:17 pm

I recently brewed my first no-boil kit.
Instead of sugar I added brown rice syrup which is going to end up in an article I'm writing for Brew Your Own about using rice in beers other than light American lager.
I'll save most of the details for the article, but I will say that it turned out better than I expected.
I'm just here for the beer.

Sounds interesting. Which kit did you brew? Can't say I've ever heard of brown rice syrup before. Is that an American speciality sugar or is it available over here too?

Edit: Sorry, that'll be the Munton's brown ale kit then. Doh!

I found it at my local supermarket and have no idea if it's available where you are. Perhaps a google search would tell you.

I imagine that you must have ended up with a lighter bodied beer than if you had bunged in the same amount of spray malt rather than the rice syrup?
Did you notice an appreciably lighter body?

I've not brewed this kit other than for the article so I can't make that comparison, but to me there's a crisp edge to it that is normal for a light American lager brewed with rice.

It's a tad on the pricy side for a tight Scotsman like myself. Can think of cheaper ways to add fermentables. As they say on Dragon's Den....for that reason I'm out.

Definitely, if all you're after is boosting O G, but I was experimenting with rice in beer other than lite American lager.
