First try - Ditch’s stout

Post by MuckyFunster » Sat Jan 20, 2018 11:33 am

I put together a Ditch’s stout yesterday after reading some hot reviews on it.

1.7kg tin of Cooper’s Stout
1kg of dark spry malt
1 mug of dark soft brown sugar

Ended up at 22 litres instead of 20 cause some foam got caught under the lip of the Krausen collar and made it look like the wort level was lower than it was. When I realised this the temperature was way down at about 14 so I put in a bit of hot water to bring it up a bit. Pitched the kit yeast at 16/18 deg c and gave the yeast a stir cause it was so foamy after blending.

The OG came in at 1046.

Not much activity overnight, don’t know if this is cause the temperature is still coming up. Stick on thermometer is still showing about 18 deg c.

I normally get 48hr lag so I wouldn't worry about it. Ditch's stout is a good un!

Just got home from work and it’s frothing away like mad. Massive head on it in the bucket!

I need to relax, take it easy, and have a homebrew!

I've done this a few times, more often than not it will pop the lid off the fermenter and spew out

I keep the fermenter in a large builders bucket to catch this

I’ve drank about half of it. It’s very nice indeed! I have 15 x 740ml bottles left. Hoping to hold onto them for a couple of months to see what Ditch’s stout tastes like with a bit of age.

Been trying to drink some not so good Geordie Lager in the meantime, to allow me to empty some of my bottles.

That should take a couple weeks or so...

Very impressed with the stout and how simple it is to make. I’ll defo be making more soon.

Thanks, I will do!

I do like a nice cup of earl grey, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy a pint of it too!
