In-Line thermometer recommendation needed
Re: In-Line thermometer recommendation needed
Its rust from an old nut that was sat next to it! I am a cheap skate so pinched the fitting from an old build

I also have a "lesser" plate chiller that has both 1/2 & 3/4" fittings and I too have used both for pushing the wort through and have experienced no real difference. I choose to put the wort through the "wrong" port i.e. the 1/2" because I concluded that you would want the greater flow through the 3/4" to be the water. Having now had the chance to look at the "mock up" (thank you very much for all your effort) it occurs to me that with my set up the dial would have to face away from the water source which I usually tweak to keep the temperature at around 20-22c. If I turned it to face the source it would then be awkward to hook up the hoses. Looks like the Blichman might have to be the solution.

I had my doubts too, until I actually tried it. Sure, it's not a high-accuracy solution, and the response time isn't great, but then those stick-on thermometer strips aren't that accurate or quick at the best of times anyway.boingy wrote:Dunc reckons the stick-on one you already have will work on the silicon hose. I have my doubts but it seems that you may have a zero cost solution at hand!

Silicone is a great insulator, I'm surprised a stick-on lcd strip reflects (no pun) the temperature of the wort carried inside it. With my RIMS system recirculating 66 degC wort I can hold the silicone hose no problems but if I touch the copper RIMS chamber then ouch!

It's worth mentioning that, unlike many Blichmann things, that particular one is quite reasonably priced. I'd probably have bought one were it not for the hose tail size. I mount the chiller right next to the FV and have a single length of rigid pipe from the chiller to the FV so it would be a faff to make a connection to the Blichmann one.

my budget in-line temp measuring solution..

the pt100 probe just needs working into the bung upto the depth of the locknut for a tight seal, the glass thermometer needed a wrap of baking sheet silicone about 6cm x 1 cm. I butchered a spare home made kettle element gasket seen in the pic.
